Here is my memory of Singapore to Batam

If you are looking for a short, affordable escape from Singapore, Batam is one of the easiest weekend trips to make. I took the Sindo Ferry from HarbourFront, and the journey itself already felt like the beginning of a little adventure. For me, this trip was the perfect mix of sea travel, shopping, good food, and a slow weekend reset.

The ferry ticket was about 35 SGD one way, which is around 27 USD or 20 GBP. That made the trip feel accessible, especially for a quick break after visiting Singapore. A day after I visited Sentosa Island — which I truly think is a must if you are travelling to Singapore — I headed to Batam. My favourite spot in Sentosa was Palawan Beach, which had the kind of relaxed atmosphere that stays in your memory.

The Ferry Journey

Travelling by ferry from HarbourFront was smooth and convenient. It is one of the easiest ways to cross from Singapore to Batam, and the route is especially popular for weekend travellers. I would recommend checking return ticket options in advance, because return fares are often cheaper and better value than buying separate tickets.

The ferry is a great choice if you want a short trip without the stress of flying. It also makes Batam ideal for people with limited time, or for travellers who may have a short visa option and do not want to spend too much on a longer holiday.

First Impressions in Batam

When I arrived, I found a large shopping mall near the main area, and it was the perfect place to get a good exchange rate if you did not already have Indonesian rupiah. That was very useful at the start of the trip.

Before crossing the bridge into the main shopping area, I saw ladies selling sweets called kha tayap. I honestly could not resist and bought some. It was one of those small travel moments that make a place feel alive and memorable.

Where I Stayed

I stayed in a budget place near the Utama area, close to Harbour Bay Batam. It was a practical location for a weekend stay because it kept me near the shopping and food areas while still being affordable.

Best Places for Food and Shopping

Batam has a nice mix of modern malls and local flavour. One of the places I enjoyed was Grand Batam Mall, where I found a number of classy restaurants serving a blend of traditional and modern Indonesian and Asian cuisine. Downstairs there was also a supermarket and some amazing dessert options.

For electronics and phone repairs, Nagoya Hill and Diamond City are both worth visiting. If you need phone screen repairs or similar services, Diamond City can be a good choice when other places feel too expensive.

The restaurants upstairs in Nagoya Hill were also a highlight. I found traditional, delicious food for just a couple of dollars, along with tasty chicken dishes that were simple but satisfying.

Why Batam Works for a Weekend

Batam is ideal if you want:

  • a short break from Singapore
  • affordable food and shopping
  • easy ferry access
  • a mix of modern malls and local culture
  • a relaxed weekend without spending too much

It is the kind of destination that gives you a lot without asking for a lot in return. Between the ferry ride, the shopping, the food, and the easy pace, it became a very good weekend escape for me.
